Sunday Sustenance

Proverbs 4:7-8 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.

The American Heritage Dictionary defines principal as "first or foremost in importance; chief." Wisdom is the most important part of life. What is wisdom, though? The American Heritage Dictionary defines wisdom as: understanding of what is true, right, or lasting. Who is more true than the One Who claimed He is "the Way, the TRUTH, and the Life" (John 14:6)? Who is more right than the Righteous One (Psalm 11:7)? Who is more lasting than He who is the Everlasting Father (Isaiah 9:6)? Likewise, the Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines wisdom as "a wise attitude or course of action." What could be a more wise course of action than following the guidelines for life which God has written down in His Word, the Bible?

King Solomon described the blessings of wisdom in Proverbs 8, writing these words in the last few verses of the chapter. Proverbs 8:33-36 Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD. But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

As you go through your everyday life it is of utmost importance to make time to spend alone with God through Bible reading, meditation (mulling it over and over in your mind), and prayer. You must make the pursuit of wisdom the principal thing you do. Your efforts to pursue God's wisdom will be futile, though, unless you come to Him through His Son, Jesus Christ. Do you have a relationship with God? Is He your Father? If you do not know for sure that you are God's child, please read here about how you can know for sure. If you do know for sure that you are one of God's children, do you daily seek the wisdom that He has to offer?
