*Newsflash* - recent news articles regarding coupons
Here's some more great newspaper articles on coupon usage.
Digital Coupon Usage Sky Rockets - states that coupons.com usage raised by 212% in the last 5 months! Maybe that is because they have been offering some great coupons lately!
Want Better coupons? Change your zip code! - interesting article on entering your zip code on coupons.com. Different zip codes get different coupons and different value coupons. I typically avoid putting in my zip code but I am wondering if putting in a "high value area" zip code would yield different coupons. What do you think? Do you enter your zip code or not?
AOL’s Shortcuts.com Adds Safeway Supermarkets to Roster - Good news for Safeway shoppers. You can now use shortcuts.com. If you haven't checked out shortcuts.com you should now? I can use it Kroger. What other stores are you able to use it at?
New $5/$25 coupon for LongHorn Steakhouse!
When we were on vacation last week, there was a $3.00/10.00 coupon for Longhorn's in one of the coupon books I picked up. We used it one night and split the Shrimp & Crab Gratin and Flo's Filet and upgraded to the Strawberry Pecan Salad (I love this salad!!!). The salad they brought out was a dinner sized salad (larger than normal) and with that and the bread we were more than full. We do this often at restaurants especially when they offer bread/rolls and salads, #1 to save money, and #2 because one or both of us would have ended up taking home a doggie bag because we can't finish our meal if we get 2 separate meals. So, our meal cost under $20.00 after coupon and it was very good!

So if you have a vacation or trip planned in the future - click above to get a free travel guide sent to you. Update***4 bags of coffee for $9.95 and FREE shipping!
********Update*********
I posted about this deal here and here. But here are the details - get 4 bags of coffee for $9.95 (this has changed from $4.95 to $9.95, but still a good deal in my opinion for 4 full size bags of coffee) and free shipping!! This does enroll you in a coffee club that will send you shipments each month but you are not obligated to buy anything else. I received my coffee in about 10 days and cancelled the next day online - it was very easy! And my husband and I have really enjoyed the coffee! I will definitely be doing this deal again when I can.
Guest post: To print or not to print!
I have had a couple of you ask me what I do with printing coupons ever since our printers exploded with the mass quantity of Kraft Foods coupons! Many of you want to print them right away as your not sure when the print limit is going to be up but at the same time you don't want to waste valuable printer ink for an item that might not have a sale soon. Plus your not sure when the expiration date is as they do not let you know until you print.
My suggestions for printing coupons online:
Only print items you will actually use:
If it is something I have not used or never plan to use I don't bother with printing it, UNLESS I know I can get it for free (or moneymaker) within that week. Even if I know I can get it for less then .50 cents each. Even though you would be getting it on the cheap is it worth spending that .50 cents or so on an item you will not use? It is only worth it if you are planning on giving it away or donating it. (I will be discussing more on this topic this week) When I 1st started "full throttle" couponing I will print everything and learned real quick it was not worth it.
With that said, you ask "Well, what if I will be able to score it for FREE in a few weeks and now I've missed out as the the coupon is no longer available?" My answer t o that... Your going to win some and you are going to lose some, but guess what! If they have offered that coupon before they will probably offer it again so after some time it will be back for you to snag!
If it is an item you use already, go ahead and print the "usual" 2 limit coupons limit that the manufacturer might offer. If a manufacturer does not set a print limit on a certain item, do think twice before printing more then 2 coupons. Unfortunately what happens is people get coupon crazy and start to print 10 + of this product and then whatever limit the manufacturer set the print limit too (say 100,000 coupons to be printed) now you might have taken away coupons from someone that did not see this as quickly as you. As with all things be considerate of others. THIS IS MY OPINION.
This will not work for everyone. It does not work for me! When I print my coupons in black and white I will always have issues with the cashier, unless "I know" them. I know some couponers will always print in B&W and if they have an issue they will speak to the manager or show the cashier the different "special" number code. To me, it is worth it to be not to be hassled and print in color. Some coupons even state that the coupon can be printed in color or B&W. If you are one of the lucky ones that are able to print in B&W and not have issues you will save alot of money on ink!
Try to find out the expiration date before printing:
If this is a coupon you are questioning, try to see if you can find the expiration date on a blog before printing. If the expiration date is soon this can help you decide if it is worth printing or not. I try to mark the expiration date on my blog when I post a printable coupon. If I don't, I might not be printing the coupon myself but will ask a reader to leave the expiration date in the comment section to share with others.
Don't leave the coupons printed but on the desk!:
I find when I do this I will forget about them. If I don't clip and sort them right away I will at least put them in my coupon folder so they don't get under a pile on the desk. If for some reason you do not use a coupon and it has hit it's expiration date, go ahead and use this for scrap paper or to print more coupons on! Never let the paper go to waste.
As you might know, some coupons print a whole ad/recipe and waste ALOT of ink! What I tend to do is WATCH the printer and press cancel once it has printed the full coupon. I then put the paper back into the printer to print more coupons on the blank areas. I have become a pro at turning and fliping the paper to get lots of coupons on one sheet and not to double on each other!
With coupons.com and other coupon printing sites, they will refresh their print limit meaning you can print your limit again! I try to keep an eye on this when there is something I use alot. Also make sure to print the coupons you want before the end of the month. At the end of the month they usually change their selection and you might miss out.

Guest post: Have you tried Swaptree yet?
The following is a guest post by Sharon Williams of Here's what I found.
I hate having stuff sitting around the house that I no longer need or want. What do I do with extra DVDs, CDs, Books, & Game system games? I post them on Swaptree. There are no points or credits to earn, no cost per transaction, no searching for matches. You simply post the titles of what you have, make a quick list of what you want and Swaptree does the rest.
Last week I posted a Star Wars Lego Gamecube game that we no longer wanted on swaptree. The next day I received an email saying I would receive Super Paper Mario Wii game in exchange. All I have to do is mail the Gamecube game (media mail rate costs less than $2.00) and I will go to my mailbox in about a week and get my new Wii game.
Here’s how it works:
- Create an account at swaptree.com (no credit card required of course) Gather your books and media you want to get rid of.
- Just type in the UPC or ISBN number of the item.
- Swaptree will automatically bring up the picture and description of item.
- You tell what kind of condition the item is in.
- Once you have listed all the things you have.... it's time to find the items you want.
- Type in the search box the item you would like to have.
- Click on 'want it'.
- List as many things as you can on your want list and have list. Your odds for a quick match go up the more items you have! Don't worry if you don't get a match right away. We've been a member for a little over 2 years and have completed over 60 trades! Sometimes we'll hit a month where we complete 3 or 4 swaps then there will be dry times when we don't get a swap at all. It all depends on what you have listed and who else is swapping.
- Now comes the fun part. - Swaptree will match you with someone who has what you want and wants what you have.
- You will get an email asking if you want to 'accept this trade'.
- You type in your password and click accept.
- Then you mail your item to them and they mail you the item you want. (I always save mailing envelopes from samples etc, so I never have to buy them)
Win -win for everyone! It's fun to think that we 'swap' stuff with people all over the country!

$10/$25 coupon for Sherwin Williams
"Centsible Savings"....even while on vacation!
Neither one of our families vacationed regularly as we were growing up, but we have made it a goal in our marriage that we take some length of “vacation” each year. Some years it has been a long 4-day weekend in the summer and in the winter, but in the past 2 years we have been able to take a full week in the summer since my husband now has vacation time at his job. We have found that now with no kids that a vacation is such a benefit to our marriage – we enjoy almost feeling like newlyweds on our honeymoon again and come back with a stronger, renewed marriage. There is just something about getting away from the stress of everyday life – work, cleaning house, paying bills, and yes, even couponing and blogging -and being able to spend one-on-one time together that is so refreshing! But this post is not all about convincing you that taking a vacation is beneficial, but how to do it and do it with “Centsible Savings!”
Here are some tips to help you save money even while you are on vacation.
1. Save throughout the year for vacation. We do not just up and decide one day that we are going on vacation and book a hotel and spend money and come back with our credit cards maxed out. We save throughout the year. We put away a small amount ($50-100), each month if we can, specifically for vacation. That way when we book the hotel and have extra expenses like gas and food (which we do charge on a credit card just for convenience and safety factor) we have the money in the bank to pay it off when we get home.
2. Use a discount site to book your lodging. I am a big fan of the discount hotel and airfare sites. Here is a few I frequently check or use: Orbitz, Travelocity, Expedia, Hotels.com, Hotwire and Priceline (the last 2 require you to bid on a certain star rating, you can’t choose the actual hotel but you can get a great deal if the unknown doesn’t bother you). I have used them throughout the years to book hotels and flights and have had good experiences with them. In fact, in the past I have looked up a hotel or flight using one of the discount sites and then gone directly to the hotel or airline website and compared rates the discount site has been lower! These sights will sometimes offer last minute deals, “stay so many nights get a night free” deals, and offer savings when booking a flight and hotel together deals. Last summer when I booked our hotel in Myrtle Beach I used Travelocity and they offered a $50 gas card when you booked a trip with them. So a few weeks after returning from vacation we received a $50 prepaid visa gas card in the mail – in essence reducing our hotel cost by that amount of money.
3. Try one of those “Telemarketer Timeshare offers.” This is not for everyone but if you are willing to sit through a 90-minute presentation and it is with a reputable company try it! We did this for the first time this year. We received a call last fall and I got all the information and asked them to call me back so I could talk it over with my husband and research the company. For $149.00 we got 2 night/3days in Gatlinburg and 3 nights/4 days in Hilton Head. We also got 2 tickets to the sky lift, black bear habitat, and the Gatlinburg aquarium and a $25 check while in Gatlinburg; and while we are in Hilton Head next week we are supposed to receive a $50 restaurant gift certificate, a $50 check, 2 golf course packages, and a coupon book! So the “perks” alone that we received would total the $149, not even counting the hotel stays. We did have to listen to a sales pitch in Gatlinburg (and they always last longer than 90 minutes!) and we have to listen to another one in Hilton Head but it has been worth it for us this year.
4. Consider staying in a hotel, villa, condo or something that offers a kitchen and separate living area in the room and that has “extras” at the hotel. This year we are not doing this because of having to stay where the timeshare people put us up, but we have always done this in previous years. That way we can spend the evening in the hotel sitting on the couch just watching a movie if we want and not have to feel like we have to be out on the town spending money on some attraction. If you have kids, look for kid-friendly hotels with kiddie water parks and lots of things to do at the hotel. Our hotel we stayed at last year in Myrtle Beach had a water park, bowling alley, and about 9 swimming pools – very family friendly!
5. Plan to eat most or all breakfasts and lunches in the hotel and only eat out for dinner. Eating 3 meals a day for 7 days at restaurants can really add up! But planning ahead and bringing food along can easily be done if you have a kitchen where you stay. Or plan to stay in a hotel that has a good continental breakfast. We don’t have a kitchen this year, but we are still going to eat in our hotel room with just a small refrigerator and microwave. We will bring our toaster, a large and small cooler, paper products, and lots of food and drinks. We plan to eat maybe one breakfast and lunch out, and lunch on travel days out. Here is our “menu” for the week.
Breafast:
- Bagels and cream cheese
- Cereal and bananas
- Cinnamon raisin toast and fruit
- Yogurt and fruit
- Sub sandwiches – bread, lunchmeat, cheese, tomatoes, mustard
- Pimento cheese sandwiches or crackers
- PB & J or PB & honey
- Sides - Fruit salad, chips, pretzels
- Microwave popcorn
- Chex mix
- “No-bake” cookies
- Icecream (we will buy a carton there)
7. Collect all the local coupon books you can find! If you have ever been in a tourist area you know what I am talking about – at the entry of every restaurant and hotel there are stands with coupon books. I drive my husband crazy grabbing everyone of these that I see! Here are some things we did with them last year in Myrtle Beach – we got free sand dollars, and free taffy at the local tourist stores and also there were coupons for restaurants, pizza, etc. and discount coupons for attractions that we used. 8. Bring everything with you that you will need for vacation. I got beach chairs last year on clearance at CVS for $3.00 and we are excited to use these this year as the lifeguards charge you to use the ones on the beach! I also have been stocking up on sunscreen, bug spray, flip flops, paper products, snack foods, and anything else we might need as the stores have had them on sale in the past weeks. Last minute purchases on these items could have cost a lot as sunscreen alone runs $8-10 a bottle!
-----------
When I get back I will share with you how we did on our vacation budget and any other new ways we were able to save money on our vacation. If you have any other great ides of how your family saves money while vacationing, please share it with us!

Sunday Sustenance
Here's what the Lord has been doing in my life this week:
My husband and I got some disappointing news last Saturday. I was so discouraged and just wanted to cry. But I am so glad that I have a Heavenly Father that knows what I am going through and will supply the encouragement that I need when I need it. Our services on Sunday were especially more meaningful to me as this situation was constantly in the back of my mind. On Sunday evenings our Pastor has been going through a series on the names of God and the names that we are called in the Bible. Last Sunday was on "Christ is the Shepherd and we are the Sheep." He used many comparisons between real life shepherds and sheep and how they relate to us:
- Sheep are difficult to shepherd because they have an inclination to panic - just what I was doing about this situation!
- Sheep need a Shepherd - I needed to leave this situation in God's hand since He knows and can do all things!
- Sheep are valuable to the Shepherd - I am valuable to God and He is looking after me even though I had felt very alone in this situation.
We then read through Psalm 23 and it meant more to me this time than all the other times had read through it. Here's the familiar passage:
"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
I am so thankful that the Lord is MY Shepherd!! And that He will not leave me to feed in a brown, weedfilled pasture, but will lead me beside the still waters, supply my everyday needs, and will be with me every step of the way!
I hope this is an encouragement to you as well. If you are going through a tough time, you don't have do it alone. The Lord will be your shepherd and will provide for you if you only ask and let Him. Read more about how to develop this relationship with God here or email me.

Wow - wish I could have read this post last week before I had my own yard sale. "The Nester" has a great post with lots of tips on being a yard seller or being yard seller shopper here. I will definitely be using some of her tips for my next yard sale later this summer.
