I had been looking for a new washing machine and came across a great deal at Lowe’s on Memorial Day. (Sometimes, waiting for a major holiday can save you a lot of money on a big item purchase. My washer was 28% off regular price, if I had bought it the week before I would have only gotten 10% off!) Perfect, as I was wanting to paint and redecorate the laundry room and figured this was the perfect time!
Here is a picture of my laundry room before. It is a nice size room and I LOVE that it is on the second floor of our house (next to all of the bedrooms). But it was a little dull and boring (ok, a lot boring!)
My plans were to add beadboard, lighten it up a bit with some light yellow paint, and add black accents. I got some of the beadboard wallpaper at Home Depot on clearance for $7 a roll and decided this would be a great chance to try it out. I also got some used chair rail for FREE!
The wallpaper was super easy to work with! You can see in the bottom picture where I needed to trim up the bottom. Once it was dry, this was really easy to trim and then paint. The upper yellow wall took 2 good coats – I ran out of paint and had to go buy a second quart. Once the wallpaper dried, I painted it, the chair rail, and baseboards.
Then my washer was delivered and set up, I installed the shelves again, put back all the laundry room soaps and such, and DECORATED! :)
I love it! It is so cheery and sunny! (By the way, I love the little shelf/hanging bar on the right. We installed that when we first moved in and it is so convenient to hang clothes up on to dry.)
The black basket is a FREE yardsale find, the candle sconce was a yardsale find from years ago (it used to hang in our bedroom), I already had the ivy and candle, so the “LAUNDRY” saying was the only accessory I bought for the room. It was 50% off at Hobby Lobby and cost $7.49.
This picture better shows the yellow color. Love it! So now if I could just get the laundry to wash and fold itself this would be the PERFECT room! :)
Total cost for this makeover:
Paint (used 1 1/2 quarts) - $7.96 each = $15.92
Beadboard wallpaper - $7.00 for one roll and used one cut from a second roll (will save the rest of that roll for a bathroom project coming up soon!) = $7.00
“Laundry” wall saying = $7.49
Chair rail = FREE!
All other accessories – I already had, just re-purposed from other rooms.
Total cost - $30.49!
Not bad for a totally different look and a room I love! Maybe I will actually look forward to doing laundry now! :)
