So you might think that I do all the work here at Centsible Savings. But I have a little secret, I have a helper! Let me introduce you to the behind-the-scenes partner here at Centsible Savings…
His name is Casper. He is snow-white, with blue eyes and a pink nose and ears. :) He will celebrate his 4 year old birthday in May, and has lived with us since he was 3 months old.
I love to tell the story of how he came to live with us! :) I grew up having numerous pets and animals –from hunting dogs to cute little dogs that we breed, chickens, two green garter snakes, fish, lots of cats, and even a peahen! When my husband and I got married, I always wanted a cat. But my husband wasn’t too keen on the idea :(
One day, my husband came home from work with a battered old box in his hand stating that he had a surprise for me! I opened up the box and out came the sweetest, most beautiful white kitten that I had ever seen!
The story goes that he had a customer come into work that day with a crate of kittens that he was trying to find homes for. My husband was asked if he would like one. He said he didn’t, but his wife would love one! When he poked his finger through the door, Casper came right up and rubbed against him with the sweetest little meow and my husband was sold! :)
Most days you can find him sleeping on the back of the couch, or bird watching from the window.
Or asking for some treats with those gorgeous baby-blues! :)
He gets his daily grooming done and keeps me company while I blog.
But when I mentioned that I just read that there is FREE cat food at Food Lion this week after coupon, here is the look I got…
When we got him, I immediately started looking for coupons and deals for cat food and litter. We have rarely paid much if anything for cat food over the last few years using coupons! 10 months ago I got about 20 bags of Goodlife Recipe Food for Cats for $0.25 each after coupon at Publix. So he has eaten for $5.00 for 10 months! I also stock up on cat treats for FREE all of the time at Kroger mega sales, so he is quite spoiled!
I buy World’s Best Cat Litter (an all-natural, organic cat litter made of corn and completely flushable!) which is a little more expensive ($7-8 for a bag). But it is so worth it since I keep the litter box right near the toilet and can flush the waste instead of bagging it and taking it outside. I stock up when I find $3 or $4 coupons and send in for rebates that they offer every few months. The bag lasts for about a month before I have to change it so we spend $4-5 a month on litter.
So it is possible to have a pet and care for them very frugally!
If anyone has any ideas on how to reduce the annual vet bill, I would love to hear about it!
Cute!! Glad he's a good little partner!! :)
ReplyDeleteI loved reading your cat story, although I am more of a dog person. My daughter got the sweetest puppy about three years ago, then she moved out and left the dog. It has since become mine, in all ways except the bills. I too, am able to get lots of pet food and treats for free. She is not too picky so, even free samples are great. My daughter however, continues to pay the vet bills, and has regular checkups for her/my dog. The way she saves is through Banfield. They are affiliated with Petsmart. I believe it is somewhat of a payment plan/insurance policy. Although there is a small fee that is deducted each month, there is never a high bill at the vet. Most times it is free. You can check it out here. http://banfield.petsmart.com/
ReplyDeleteI have heard about pet insurance but never checked prices. Will check into it and see! Thanks!
